Los del Abasto

The essence of the Rio de la Plata - the river separating Argentina and Uruguay - is tango, a music form popular all over the world. "El Abasto" is a large market in Uruguay with a great variety of fresh local food. Tango has been danced and played in this market for more than 100 years, the tradition of Valses Criollos, tangos and milongas is still going strong. Alejandro Sarkissian, leader and pianist of the group, was born in Montevideo and is familiar with this tradition. Together with his musicians - from different market places in Europe - he intends to interpret tango in old and new style. Los del Abasto play both danceable tangos in the original sound as well as concert and modern tangos with jazz and improvisation elements.
